Okay, let's quickly walk through exactly what I was doing not going to go through in Mega Mega detail because you have obviously
Me playing it live you've got the full tab that you can look at and as well as that you've got the backing track
That you can play along to so let's have a look break it down into a few little phases
First part of the solo goes goes like this
[D] [Am]
You can hear that [D] very difficult to play
[Am]
[G] All he's doing here, this is like the sort of precursor to the main solo
We've got finger on the first fret of the E string and another finger on the fifth fret of the G string
We're going to slide it up two [D] frets
like that so we end up on the fifth fret E and the
seventh fret on the G string
Then we quickly change positions [Am] and play that [Ab] we've got the fifth fret E and the fifth fret G
[D]
[Am] [D] Okay
That's like a precursor you can hear me playing it
It's not very high in the mix, but it's a beautiful little way to start the solo
Then comes the main part of the riff and it starts off by [Am] going
[D]
Beautiful, isn't it?
what he's doing starting off on the fifth fret of the a string and hammering on to the
Seventh fret of the a string and what I'm doing.
I'm hitting
Pulling up.
I'm using an upstroke.
It's almost like
Slapping it like [Bm] that and when I'm hammering on from the fifth fret to the seventh fret of the a string
I'm just releasing the pressure on my left hand so it doesn't ring out
Okay, and he does that like this
[Am]
That's the first [Bm] bit of the solo.
[Ab] [D]
So we're going to do the same on the D string
[E]
fifth hammer on [F]
[Am] to the seventh and [D]
then the finals sort of slappy bit with the plectrum
Upstroke is the fifth fret of the G string
[Am]
[E] The next bit is a bit I really like the way he manages to slide up to this [G] next bit
So I'll just show you that in contents [D] context
[Am] So [Bb]
[D] [Am]
[Bm] we've hit the fifth fret of the G string.
We're then going to slide from the seventh to the ninth fret of the G string
[Am]
Like that then we then going to hit the B string there on the eighth fret and bend it up
Two notes to the tenth fret [Gm] so it goes
[A] [G] like [A] [G] [Bm]
that
[E] [G] [Am] Does [Dbm] [Eb] it very [Db] slowly?
Quite heavy strings on here.
So desperately [D] trying to bend it up enough
[Am] Been
[E] [A]
[D] a bit more needed actually
[A]
That's [D] too [Am] much
[A]
That's it nailed it that time keep practicing it.
So you get it exactly right.
So we're going hammering fifth to [Bm] seventh
Fifth to seventh on the a string fifth to seventh D string
[C] fifth fret we're just going to hit it once and we're going to slide from the
seventh to the ninth fret [B] on the [Em] G and then we're going to hit the
Eighth fret there on the B string and pull it up two notes two steps.
So [A] [G] it's
[A] like that
[Ab] Then the next bit he does is [Am] fantastic.
This is really a hallmark of Robert Cray as well
He's going to slap the strings
But this year time using dead down strokes and we're going to use the eighth fret of the E
down to the tenth fret of the B
Like that and put some [Gb] vibrato on it
so we [D] have
[Am]
[Dm]
[C]
[Dm]
[E] Okay, one more time
[Am]
Now we're going to play an a minor chord twice again using vibrato
And what we're going to do we're going to put our fingers in this position
and use some vibrato
Like that.
So what we're doing is playing an a minor shape on the 12th fret.
So on the G string, we've got the 14th fret
B string we have the 13th fret and then we've got the 12th fret on the E string and we're going to go
like that
[D] So so far we have
[Am]
Doesn't [G] [Am]
matter if you hit two strings together necessarily as long as they all do ring out
Like that and then we're going to go back down to the a minor shape there and to make this easier to play
I play it like this
That's the way I play it, but you can play it.
However you like and what we're doing here seventh fret a
seventh fret D
fifth fret G
again, it's the first part using the
E note like that starting off in your E note there, but it's part of the a minor chord
And bit of vibrato as well.
I tend to go
Just do that one there you can do it
We can play it
However, you want but I tend to go just vibrato that last note
Now [E]
that way it doesn't necessarily ring out those bottom two notes.
So if you can play it like that
[Am]
May [D] sound even better.
I'm just sort of like teaching you the different teaching you notes in different ways
You can play it.
So so far we have
[Am]
Okay, or and then it ends up by going like this
Using all those techniques again
So we're going to take it from the lower a minor
Okay, [E]
so we're gonna slide G string fifth to seventh
like that again
bringing your finger off the G string and
Slapping it quite hard up with on the upstroke with your [A] plectrum
[Am] Then we're going to get down to the seventh fret of the D string
again all the time that same technique or
Play it however you like and then finishing off [E] with a
[Am] Like that so that last bit goes
Seventh fret on the D string pull off to the fifth fret
[G]
[Gb] [C] Like that
Okay, and finishing off on the seventh fret [E] of the a string
[Am] So the last bit goes
all those slappy things
[E] So you put all those bits together and we have this
[A]
[D] [Am]
[D] [Am]
Okay, how you enjoyed that now?
That's a new technique that I've not really played much
But I love Robert Cray and thought I'd teach it to you because it's something a little bit different off the mainstream
And it's a good intro and a good beginning to a fantastic solo
So I hope you enjoy those techniques play along with the backing track and let me know how you're getting on
Catch you all soon.
Ciao for now
